Foodie? F'Real F'Real?

So one of the nurses I work with asks me:

"So do you EVER eat at home, Joanne?"

Of course I do. If I am ever there. I spend most of my time outside of the home, so I have to resort to eating out a lot. But when I am home, I do try to make a meal there.

I do consider myself a "foodie," but I do eat frozen lasagna and chicken nuggets, 3 for a $1 packets of Lucky Me! Pancit Canton from the Oriental market, and *gasp* I even eat SPAM!

I'm human.

I just don't understand why people have this air about them that reeks, "I will neva eva eva eat anything that came from a package. Eva. If I do, I have failed as a foodie."

C'mon. Some people take this foodie-ness to a whole other level that I don't want to get myself into. Some foodies are SNOBS. For real for real.

I eat Sour Cream and Onion Pringles. So what? OMG! I had some food from a fast food chain! OMG, fast food is for demons. OMG, how can a foodie do that? That's it, I'm going to disintergrate into the realms of food hell.

There are cooks who eat only homemade stuff, which is totally cool. If I was a cook, I'd probably be home a lot more...

But I'm an eater...if it tastes good, I'll eat it. If it's gross, you best believe I'd leave it on the plate. I went to the Ritz for dinner the other night and there were things on my plate that were SO NOT edible. I didn't care if I was at a 5-star restaurant. I ain't eating it.

Just because I like to eat at nicer places does not entail that that's ALL I eat. I mean, shoot, money ain't growing under my armpits, and even if that was so, I'd still probably go buy myself a Whopper with cheese.

So there.

*sticks out tongue*

Incanto - Birthday Part III - Random Animal Parts

Restaurant: Incanto
Address: 1550 Church Street, Noe Valley, SF
Phone Number: (415) 641-4500
Cuisine: Italian
Date Last Visited: March 20, 2008
Dining Partners: BanYo and Miko

So I have this friend. And his name is BanYo. He’s my soul-sistah. Yes, you read right. Soul-sistah. I met him in 2005 back in a Filipino-American Literature class in community college. Since then, we have been friends. And I love him. BanYo enrolled in culinary school last month and I am jealous. Sisters are supposed to be jealous of one another. So I’m jealous of him. Anyhow, he wanted to take me to dinner for my birthday and he suggested Incanto. INCANTO?! Hell yes! Incanto has been on my list to go to so it was perfecto! BanYo is intrigued with offal, so this was going to be a destination for him as well.

Tucked in Noe Valley, Incanto is a place that all those damn Chowhounders recommend when someone asks, “I’m coming to visit San Francisco, so where do I eat?” Far enough away from Downtown, but close enough that you can still feel the City’s charm. Yes, it is Italian, but do not come here if you are expecting spaghetti with meatballs or fettuccini Alfredo. Expect dishes that let the ingredients sing…not doused by goopy sauces or masked by less than edible concoctions.

The ambiance of Incanto is rustic with rich woods and fancy draperies. The candles on each table adds a sense of romance once the sun goes down and the room grows dimmer and dimmer with each minute. The wait staff was so helpful with our questions about the menu because there were things listed that we were not at all familiar with.

Owner and Executive Chef Consentino is known for his appearances on the Food Network, in “Iron Chef America” and “The Next Iron Chef.” Unfortunately, I didn’t follow those shows so I was not familiar with his style until I got to the restaurant. BanYo told me that he wanted to go there because of the selection of random animal parts you can feast on. OFFAL. Random animal parts. I can’t do anything but the muscle tissue of the animal, so offal? I wasn’t quite sure, but since BanYo was excited, I made myself excited too…but not to HIS extent and you will see why as you read along.

For the beverage, I took a half-glass of a 2006 Pinot Grigio, Valle Isarco from Alto Adige ($4.50). Incanto has a great list of “featured wines” and this particular one was under the “Delicate and Crisp” section. Great choice. I am beginning to think that I was a wine maker from Alto Adige in one of my past lives because for some odd reason, I go for a wine out of that region by accident. I do not realize until later that my wine was from there. =) When I went to Sociale, I got a wine from Alto Adige and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Alto Adige hasn’t disappointed me yet.

We had some complementary focaccia, breadsticks, and baguette with an olive tapenade. I don’t do olives, but the herbs on the focaccia made the slices perfect by themselves.

For my starter, I had a nice plate of Spring Lettuces with Herbs and Zinfandel Vinaigrette ($7.50). I wanted something light because I was going to indulge on the entrée. What I liked about the salad was that the greens were fresh and the dressing was tangy, but not too overpowering.

BanYo (who I knew was going to go all out) ordered the Pig’s Trotter with Foie Gras, Bacon and Shinko Pear ($14). While ordering this dish, BanYo kept in mind that by 2012, whole foie gras would be banned. Say it ain’t so! For some reason, they are going to pass a stupid law saying that serving a WHOLE foie gras in an establishment will be illegal. I do not know what are the parameters behind this mandate, but I think it’s STUPID. Anyway, our server also joined in on the conversation and said that we can still get our foie gras groove on just as long as it is not in its whole form. We can have it sliced, diced, in a terrine, etc. etc. See, that’s why I think it’s stupid. ANYWAY, good Lord have mercy this was so rich. It screamed “Myocardial Infarction and Cardiovascular Accident,” but did I have some? You bet your last pennies I did. Under the foie gras was a piece of toast that sucked in all of that glorious gravy, fat, flavor, and plain “sin juice.” Seriously, Chef Consentino should be awfully ashamed of himself. He will surely be responsible for my raising cholesterol levels and increased heart disease risk…but the textures are so delicate. *cries in guilt* The trotters are almost gelatinous and the foie melts in your mouth. WOW. So rich and hearty. I thought I was going to fall over dead of happiness right then and there. Remarkable dish and one you can only get here.

Behold my entrée: Handkerchief Pasta with Rustic Pork Ragu ($15). I thought of it as deconstructed lasagna with extra meat in the sauce but without all that ricotta cheese. It was everything I thought it would be: very tender sheets of pasta with a hearty sauce that hugged me from the inside. It was very simple and I could not have asked for anything more. I wanted to make sure that whatever I ordered that I would enjoy it and finish it all…and I did.

Balsamic-Braised Pork with Tardivo & Polenta ($19). This was Miko’s entrée and before ordering I asked the server what tardivo was and he replied by saying that it was a bitter green and he was right. My tongue does not tolerate bitterness, so I did not enjoy the greens at all. The meat in that jus was GREAT. It felt apart with a fork and that POLENTA. I used to hate polenta because whenever I had it, it would be plain, tasteless, and goopy. I only learned later that on those occasions, it was made wrong. Now let me tell you about this polenta: it must have been the best polenta I have EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. Ever. Creamy and yummy. I would go back for this – minus the tardivo.

Grilled Lamb Liver with Onion Puree, Pea Tendrils & Horseradish ($21). Short and sweet: I don’t do liver. AT ALL. Didn’t try it. BanYo tried convincing me. I didn’t because I would have probably spat it back out and insulted the chef. Not my intention, so I just let him have it to himself. Didn’t care to ask him how it was…however, he did mention that it was on the grainy side. Compared to the foie gras, yes, it would be a lot more grainy, as would any other four-legged animal’s liver. Ick. Sorry. No. Moving on.

Chocolate Tarlet with Honey-Buttermilk Ice Cream ($7.50). Initially, this tart came with another type of ice cream…I’m forgetting how, but the honey-buttermilk was in another dessert and BanYo asked if we could do a little switcharoo, and they did! So great. The tart was filled with chocolate, a little too much for me, but it was great with the ice cream. =)

My Meyer Lemon-Poppy Seed Tortina with Lemon Curd ($6). Yes, if you have been reading my blog for a while, you should already know that I LOVE citrus. The tortina, which looked like a regular cupcake to me, was on the dry side. The lemon curd was where it was at though. Nice and tangy and creamy. Fabulous. Love how they included white chocolate into the mix. I wasn’t expecting the candle at all and the servers were so attentive…=)

Happy birthday to me!! =)

After this wonderful dinner, we were getting up to leave. My bag got stuck on the chair next to me and when I got up, I knocked the chair over. Embarrassing. BanYo and Miko were already half-way to the door, but one of the servers was right behind me helping me pick up my chair. =) GREAT SERVICE. They answered all our questions without making us feel stupid. Awesome place. You will find me there again.

Why I Love My Office's Kitchen - April 2008 -Episode 1

Because of all the goodies that we get!!

A patient brought these for us...these are THE BEST cupcakes I have ever had. Period.

I'm simple when it comes to cupcakes. I like vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. My coworker Halle and I agree that whipped frosting is better than buttercream. =) I LOVE the frosting on this cupcake. Light, airy, and perfectly sweet. I hate how stiff and hard buttercream gets, and this was just OhHhHhHhHhHhHhHhHhHhHhHhHh...

Look at it, I'm serious, look at it. It's like a CLOUD of goodness. I do have to say, though, that the other cupcakes did not impress me. The chocolate with raspberry frosting was too dry. I didn't try the others, but I was perfectly happy with my vanilla on vanilla. =)

One of our nurses brings goodies from Boulange...and thank God for him the wind beneath my wings. I get excited like a dog in heat whenever I see this box...

Chorizo Quiche. Yeah. Enough said.

Crust. Buttery. Perfect. Egg. Light. Chorizo. Meaty. Me. Happy.

The other varieties include bacon with peas and vegetable.

A patient brought this in and it is truly GORGEOUS. Too pretty to eat, but we ate it all anyway!

Another patient brought these goodies and I was in for a delight.

Fancy cookies. I didn't have one, but one of my doctor's did and he enjoyed it very much. In fact, he said, "These are my favorites." Awesome blossom.

Fruit tarts, eclaires, chocolate tartlettes, puff pastry, PRINCESS CAKE. See that green cake with the cream and raspberry going through it? OMG BECKY. That cake is BOMB. I usually do not like raspberry, but this is an exception. Remarkable array of desserts.

Popcorn. I know, it's "just" popcorn, but the point I am making here is that my patients are the greatest people in the world. I love my patients so much!!! The patient who brought the popcorn is my "Tita" (aunt in Filipino), not blood-aunt, but someone who I love and enjoy seeing whenever she comes in.

Harvey Wallbanger cake. For those who do not know what a "Harvey Wallbanger" cocktail is, it's basically an alcoholic beverage made with vodka, Galliano, and orange juice. Our patient got up at 5 in the morning to make this cake for us, and you all should know how much I love orange, so I LOVED THIS CAKE. So moist and perfectly flavored that I almost got drunk off how good it was. All the vodka probably evaporated out while baking, but man, this was so good.

OKAY OKAY, not from the kitchen, but this is my guilty pleasure. Massaging back rest. I'm short, so my legs do not touch the ground if I sit all the way back, so I got this and it made everything feel better. =)

I LOVE MY OFFICE. The coworkers. The patients. The treats. The satisfaction of knowing I'm helping how humanity in some way. I love it ALL. =)

Roy’s - Birthday Part I - Hau ‘Oli La Hanau with Ohana!

Restaurant: Roy’s
Address: 575 Mission St. @ 2nd, SOMA, SF
Phone Number: (415) 777-0277
Cuisine: Hawaiian Fusion
Date Last Visited: March 14, 2008
Dining Partners: Momma, SAM, Jenn, Rox, Star, and Ate Di

So the last time I went here was about a year ago with my coworkers when I still worked at the optometry office. That was the first job that got me OVER 12 bucks an hour, so I thought I was hot stuff when I could afford a 35-dollar meal. My coworkers, who were making my earnings and then some, suggested this place because one of the former employees (who I just so happened to go to high school with) came back to the Bay from spending some time in So Cal for school. That was the first time I had ever had a prix fixe and the first time I had spent that much money on myself for dinner (35 prix fixe - 50 including the tax and tip). Since then I was hooked on making money for dinners like this…besides, that Roy’s famous molten lava cake was terrific. I had always wanted to go back.

Fast forward to my birthday weekend and I thought that this would be the best place to bring my family because:

1) the food genre and ingredients are safe
2) the prix fixe is affordable for the 7 of us
3) this would be the first visit for everyone except me
4) that molten lava cake was calling my name
5) I made a promise to Ate Di that I would treat her there because we LOVE Hawaii

Spicy edamame - very good variation because I am not used to them being spicy

Roy’s Canoe Appetizer - 1 of 2 platters on the table - comes with Ahi Tuna Poke, Kahlua Pork Lumpia, Szechuan Baby Back Ribs, Shrimp Sticks, and lobster potstickers

Ahi Tuna Poke: This is delectable. I knew that I was in trouble because with two Lent-I’m-Not-Eating-Meat girls at my end of the table, that they were going to jump on this. Rightfully so because the ahi was so good. I love raw tuna. I love tuna period, but this is a great poke.

Here you can see the Kahlua Pork Lumpia on the right, the Szechuan Baby Back Ribs in the back and the Shrimp Sticks front and center. Because I had those two Lent-I’m-Not-Eating-Meat girls at my end of the table, they were going to eat the shrimp sticks only which left the lumpia and the ribs to myself. SCORE. The lumpia was nothing special because I eat lumpia all the time. I liked the shrimp sticks because they were nice and meaty and sweet. THE RIBS. Yes, I am a non-practicing Catholic and I did eat meat during Lent, but damn with ribs like these…shoot. They were tender and finger-lickin’ good. The sauce was sweet with a little heat in the background. OhHhHhHhHhHhHh…I was about to suck on the bones to get every smidgen of sauce and tendril of meat off of them, but I was going to be a lady on this night.

These were the lobster potstickers and I prefer my potstickers deep fried as opposed to just being browned on the bottom. I am very familiar with these guys, so again, nothing so special I have to write about them, but they were tasty. Everything on this canoe was extremely appetizing. The canoes for the seven of us was nearly 100 BUCKS!!! GOD LORD! A little pricy, but it was good. I don’t know if I would spend that much on an app again, though.

Jo without a Midori Sour on hand? Never. Thanks, Ate Di! Now back to the food…

Miso Salmon and Tofu Salad with Aloha Ponzu Sauce. This was the appetizer for a few of the ladies. I didn’t get to taste the salad or tofu, but the salmon was very meaty and cooked nicely. This in itself would be a nice, light entrée for most people.

Yamaguchi Hawaiian Crunch Winter Roll - Shrimp Tempura, Avocado, Shiso, and Curry Aioli. I love me my sushi, so I was glad that this was an option for an app. It’s basically a simple shrimp tempura wrapped in the nori and rice. Star, who was giving up meat, ate one and was alarmed because the magenta powder/specks/crunchy things were bacon bits. We asked the waitress and she said that they were actually freeze-dried beets that they crumbled on top. So interesting. I would never have known if we never asked. I really liked this roll, but nothing too extraordinary because you can get a shrimp tempura roll almost anywhere, but just the fact that it was sprinkled with freeze-dried beet is unusual.

Red Wine Braised Short Ribs with Celery Puree, Pearl Onions, Brussel Sprouts, Whole Grain Mustard Sauce. SAM and I ordered this. The first time that I came to Roy’s I ordered the short ribs and I absolutely fell in love with them. I saw “short ribs” on the menu and automatically thought of the ones from L &L Hawaiian BBQ or Hawaiian Drive-Inn that are on the bone still, but these are boneless, meaty, and oh so tender. You seriously do not need a knife for these. Seriously.

Fresh Hawaiian Ono and Crab Dynamite with a Spicy Chive Butter Sauce. Ate Di and Rox ordered this. Ono is a very meaty fish, so it almost ate like chicken to me. What I actually like most about this dish were the vegetable sushi. They were filled with asparagus and carrots. Yum.

I think this “dynamite” dish wins the award for “Best Plating.”

Panang Style Tiger Shrimp with Vegetable Coconut Curry and Jasmine Rice. Jenn ordered this and offered me a prawn. I tasted it and the curry flavor REALLY came through. I was almost scared that it would be too strong for Jenn, but she killed the plate.

Roy’s Classic Roasted Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi with Lobster Butter Sauce. Star ordered this because she asked the waitress what the house specialties were and she recommended this. When she took a bite, she said that it was bland and proceeded to squeeze lime juice on it. I tried it WITH the sauce and it was perfectly tasty to me. I guess she needed more of that butter sauce.

Flat Top Seared Sirloin Deglazed in Sake with Green Peppercorn Sauce. SO surprised that Momma got steak because she is usually the “fish and rice” type of a person. Actually, half of that statement was true…she asked the waiter for a bowl of plain white rice. HOW FILIPINO!! I took a bite and I liked my meat better. I know I know…mine were short ribs and WAY more tender than hers (completely different cooking methods and cuts of meat), but I wasn’t too fond of the sauce that came with it. It was too salty and strong in flavor…

but the dish sure does photograph beautifully…

Hazelnut Praline Crème Caramel with Candied Pecans. Ate Di, who gave up cake for Lent (BOO!) was the only one at the table who got the OTHER dessert. I had a taste and it was okay. The crème caramel was indeed filled with hazelnut flavor, but more than I needed. Not something that I would order, but since she gave up cake, she really had no other choice. The candied nuts on it were really good, though.

Roy’s Melting Hot Chocolate Soufflé - Flourless Chocolate Cake with a Molten Hot Center served a la Mode. So this was the reason why I came here. I was somewhat disappointed because I remember it being SO good the first time. Then again, I have made lava cake at home and it tasted almost identical. It was still very good, but it didn’t have the same affect as the first time. I guess my Roy’s Molten Lava Cake cherry has been popped completely. We had eaten so much food during dinner that I didn’t even finish it. The waitress said, “Shame on you!” Rightfully so, but you shouldn’t miss out on this. The center was still hot and it went so well with the cold ice cream. We all know that combination is awesome. =)

Happy birthday to Momma, Cuzzin Jenn and Me! These were little cheesecake tartlets with candied nuts and whipped cream. I actually enjoyed these more so than the molten lava cake. Too bad that they only offer them for birthdays.

When I got home, I was really sad because I didn’t get to take a picture of Roxy and Jenn. =( So I dedicate this to them…Momma told me to go to the restroom and to look at the picture of the girl on the restroom door. It SO looks like Roxanne when she was a little kid. =) So cute.

I would have to say that this dinner was a success…yeah, it was about $500 for the whole thing, but it was worth it. Everyone enjoyed themselves and that is what matters the most. =) Great way to kick off my birthday weekend!!!!
